Fire drills are important, but school safety goes deeper. From playground design to bus protocols and visitor management, we outline a holistic safety framework for Indian schools.
The 2004 Kumbakonam school fire and subsequent Supreme Court directions made fire safety mandatory in every Indian school. Two decades later, the conversation needs to move from a once-a-year drill to a full school safety programme.
Infrastructure safety
Annual structural audit, NBC-compliant fire detection in every classroom and corridor, two means of egress from every floor, playground equipment inspections, and tested electrical earthing across the campus.
Transport safety
GPS-tracked buses with speed governors, trained female attendants on every route, verified driver credentials, and parent-facing arrival alerts. Bus evacuation drills should happen at least twice a year.
Visitor and child-protection protocols
Biometric or photo-ID visitor logs, escort policy for parents and vendors, background-checked staff, and an anonymous reporting channel for students and parents.
Emergency response
A written emergency plan covering fire, earthquake, medical, intruder, and severe weather — rehearsed with the local fire station and hospital. Parents should receive the plan at admission.
