ABC powder, CO2, foam, or water mist? The wrong choice can be dangerous. This guide helps you match extinguisher types to the hazards in your office, factory, or warehouse.
An extinguisher is only useful if it matches the fire class it will face. The Bureau of Indian Standards classifies fires into Class A (solids), B (flammable liquids), C (flammable gases), D (combustible metals), F or K (cooking oils), and electrical fires.
Office and commercial buildings
ABC dry powder (IS 15683) for general areas, CO2 (IS 15683) near server rooms and electrical panels, and Class F wet-chemical units in pantries with deep fryers.
Manufacturing and warehouses
ABC powder for general production, foam (AFFF) for solvent storage, CO2 for switchgear, and Class D powder for facilities handling magnesium, sodium, or lithium.
Sizing and placement
Travel distance to the nearest extinguisher should never exceed 15 m. Mount between 1 m and 1.5 m from the floor, with clear signage and an unobstructed access path. Service annually and pressure-test as per IS 2190.
